Vaibhav Suryavanshi: Father left cricket, sold land, taught from the age of 5, now son created history in IPL auction

Vaibhav Suryavanshi: Father left cricket, sold land, taught from the age of 5, now son created history in IPL auction

13 years and 8 months old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has created history even before playing in the Indian Premier League. He has become the youngest player to be sold in the history of IPL. Vaibhav, who entered the mega auction of IPL 2025 with his base price of Rs 30 lakh, has been bought by Rajasthan Royals team for Rs 1 crore 10 lakh. Last month itself, Vaibhav Suryavanshi created a record by scoring a century in just 58 balls in the Under-19 Youth Test match against Australia. Suryavanshi has also become the batsman to score the fastest century for India in the Youth Test.

Son following in father's footsteps

While talking to NDTV, his father Sanjeev Suryavanshi told that Vaibhav is currently in Dubai for the Under-19 Asia Cup. During this, while remembering the days of difficulties and struggle, he said that he had planned to make him a cricketer since childhood. I too used to be a state level cricketer in my time. At that time Bihar Cricket Association was not recognized. He himself could play only till Bihar and remained confined here. After the birth of Vaibhav, he left cricket and started a business to run his household but could not get success in that too. Then he joined a newspaper and started sending news from Tajpur block of Samastipur and became a journalist. Meanwhile, Vaibhav also grew up and I saw myself in him.

Used to travel 15 kilometers every day

Vaibhav's father further said that from the age of 5, I started teaching him cricket at home. Gradually as he grew up, realizing the need for a coach, he got him admitted to Brajesh Jha's training camp at Patel Maidan in Samastipur city. Every day, he would take him to Samastipur, 15 kilometers away from his native village Motipur, to practice and bring him back home. At the age of 8, he performed well in the Under-16 District Trial.

During this time, he joined district level and state level teams at such a young age. Meanwhile, my work also stopped and I was not able to find enough money to spend on Vaibhav, so I met the expenses by selling some land in the village. After 10 years, he also got training in Patna. Then he participated in many series. At the age of 12 and a half, he also played Ranji Trophy for Bihar.

Had created history by making Ranji debut for Bihar

After making his first-class debut for Bihar in January 2024, Suryavanshi caught everyone's attention with a brilliant century during the September India U19 vs Australia U19 Youth Test series. Suryavanshi is all set to represent India in the upcoming Under-19 Asia Cup. Recently, a two-match unofficial test series was played between the under-19 teams of India and Australia. In this, Lal of Bihar had scored a century in just 58 balls.

Now he is just one place behind England batsman Moeen Ali. He scored a century in 56 balls in Under-19 in 2005. With this, Vaibhav has made the record of the fastest century by an Indian in the Under-19 Test. Vaibhav's father Sanjeev Suryavanshi told that 'now he is not just my son, but the son of entire Bihar.' He will make his younger son also a cricketer.
