Former India and Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hinted at continuing playing in IPL 2025, saying that he wants to enjoy whatever cricket he is playing in his last few years as a player. Last season, Dhoni batted much lower in the order after handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Due to this, speculations started about his future.
Dhoni will play as an uncapped player!
In IPL, all the franchises will have to submit the list of their retained players by 31st October before the mega auction. Dhoni may be retained as an uncapped player by CSK this year. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Dhoni said at a promotional event held in Goa a few days ago, 'I want to enjoy whatever cricket I have been able to play in my last few years.'
Dhoni wants to enjoy like childhood
Dhoni said, 'I want to enjoy the game the same way as in childhood we used to go out and play at four in the evening. Just enjoyed the game. When you play a game professionally, sometimes it becomes difficult to enjoy it. There are emotions and commitments involved in everything I do, but I want to enjoy the game for the next few years. Last week, Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Vishwanathan had also said that he is hopeful that Dhoni will be a part of the team as a player in the upcoming season.
Said even after batting in lower order
Dhoni batted lower in the order during the 2024 IPL season after undergoing left knee surgery in 2023. The former India captain said that this decision was mainly taken to give young Indian players a chance to spend time on the field before the T20 World Cup. Dhoni said, 'My thinking was simple. If other people are doing their job well then why do I need to come in the upper order.
'What I was kind of doing…'
Dhoni said, 'If you are specifically talking about last year, the T20 World Cup team was going to be announced soon. Therefore, we have to give a chance to those people who were in the race for a place in the national team. This former Indian captain said, 'In our team (CSK), there were players like (Ravindra) Jadeja and Shivam Dubey who needed a chance to prove themselves to come into the Indian team. There was nothing in it for me, no selection and stuff. So I am fine (playing lower down the order) and my team was happy with what I was doing.
