Deal signed in February 2024
Actually, a deal worth about Rs 71,455 crore was signed between Reliance Industries and Disney India in February 2024. This new joint venture includes 120 TV channels and two streaming services Jio Cinema and Disney Plus Hotstar. According to reports, major cricket and sports events including IPL 2025 will be visible on Disney Plus Hotstar, although no official statement has come out from the company regarding this change yet.

Reliance's JioCinema has the rights to IPL cricket, a money-spinner and the most-streamed content, as well as the Winter Olympics and Indian Super League football. At the same time, Hotstar has the rights to various sports events apart from domestic Pro Kabaddi League, ICC events.
Disney Plus Hotstar has better technology
Disney Plus Hotstar has better live streaming technology. Because of this, the hosting rights of all sports events are being transferred from Jio Cinema to Hotstar. Another aspect is that Hotstar's record in live streaming is quite tremendous. If reports are to be believed, the target to shift live streaming of all sports from Jio Cinema to Disney Plus Hotstar has been set for January 2025.

However, no information has been revealed regarding whether the entertainment content of the two streaming platforms will be integrated or whether one app will be closed. Approval from CCI for this merger was given in August 2024.
