This former Australian captain said that when you got the farewell test on your own terms. Then why do you want to make things difficult for the youth now?
New Delhi. Border Gavaskar Trophy (Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25) is getting closer. Next month, Team India will tour Australia for a 5-Test series. Meanwhile, former Australian Test opener David Warner has also expressed his desire to break his retirement and return. Warner said that after his retirement the Kangaroo team has not got any opener till now. In such a situation, if the team management thinks it is right then he is ready to return.
But former Australian captain Lisa Sthalekar did not like this and has openly expressed her displeasure on this wish of Warner. He said that why do you want to return to Test cricket now, when you have even got a farewell Test in Test cricket on your home ground on your own terms. With this, why do you want to increase the difficulties of the upcoming young batsmen and why do you want to reduce their chances of getting set in the team.
David Warner retired from Test cricket after playing the Sydney Test against Pakistan in January this year. After this, Australia tried their star batsman Steve Smith at the opening in place of Warner. But in the 4 Tests played after Warner, he could not make much of an impact on the opening. He has scored only 171 runs at an average of 28.50. After this, Australia's Chief Selector George Bailey has asked Smith to play back at number 4 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In such a situation, the Kangaroo team will once again have to find a batsman in the opening position as a new partner for Usman Khawaja. Seeing this opportunity, David Warner has expressed his desire that if the team management considers it right to give him a chance, then he is ready to return to Test cricket by playing in the Sheffield Shield.
Warner had said on Code Sports, 'Australian players have played only one red ball match (Sheffield Shield) since their last Test match played in February. In such a situation, my preparation before the series against India is the same as that of other players. If they think that they need me in the upcoming BGT series, then I would happily play the Shield game.
The former captain of the Australian women's team has shown displeasure on this. Lisa Sthalekar said in a conversation with The Nightly, 'He has ended his Test career on his own terms. He has bid farewell from the field. Now he is talking about making a comeback after seeing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Now enough is enough, after this next summer England will be on tour here, even then if you say the same then when will other young batsmen get a chance.
