Cricket will not be a part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games

Cricket 2026 राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों का हिस्सा नहीं होगा

New Delhi New Delhi : According to ESPNcricinfo, cricket will not be a part of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which will be held from July 23 to August 2, 2026. This time the competition will feature only ten disciplines and cricket, which made its comeback during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham through the Women's T20 tournament after its last appearance in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur CWG, is not on the programme. Australia won the tournament by defeating Harmanpreet Kaur-led India in the final. The Australian women's team was led by legendary, multiple World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning.

No specific reasons have been given yet for removing the game from the schedule along with hockey, badminton, shooting and wrestling along with other sports. According to ESPNcricinfo, CWG CEO Katy Sadleir said, “The 2026 Games will be a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow – our journey to reestablish and redefine sport as a truly collaborative, flexible and sustainable model for the future.” “An exciting first step in a global event that reduces costs, reduces environmental footprint, and increases social impact – while expanding the scope of countries able to host.” The budget appears to be the reason for reducing CWG 2026 to a great extent.

This comes as cricket is set to make its return to the Olympics after 128 years at the 2028 Los Angeles edition. Cricket was part of the Olympics in 1900 and will now feature in the T20 format at the Los Angeles Olympics. Great Britain won the cricket gold medal in 1900 by defeating France in the final. Cricket was also brought back to the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year after 2014, with a multi-nation T20 tournament for men's and women's teams. India won both the top awards, with Afghanistan and Bangladesh winning silver and bronze respectively in the men's category, while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh won silver and bronze in the women's category.

The decision to include cricket in the Olympics 2028 was taken at the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session held in Mumbai in October last year. Niccolo Campriani, director of the LA2028 local organizing committee, said at the time he announced the game's return, “Some of you may be wondering if in L.A. [क्रिकेट] Why.” “Well, the commitment to growing cricket in America is real, and that's already happening with the launch of the first Major League Cricket season earlier this year, which exceeded all expectations. and in 2024 [पुरुषों का] The T20 World Cup is going to be held in the US and West Indies,” he concluded.
