Venkata Krishna B: Indian cricketer Ashwin was given the Man of the Series award against Bangladesh. Ashwin did wonders with both bat and ball in the Test series. This was Ashwin's 11th Player of the Series award in his Test career. He reached par with Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan in terms of winning Player of the Series the most number of times.
Ashwin could have overtaken Muralitharan by winning this award against Bangladesh. However, this could not happen due to the West Indies Cricket Board. India had won 1-0 in the cricket series held in West Indies last year. Ashwin had taken 15 wickets in the series and also played an inning of 56 runs. He was the biggest contender for the Man of the Series award.
When the second match was over in Port of Spain, India was given the trophy. However, the Player of the Tournament award was not given. Indian Express questioned West Indies Cricket regarding this. The board said that the sponsor of the series was an Indian agency and they had no connection with it. The agency said that he was only watching the commercial.
Ashwin can still leave Muttiah Muralitharan behind. The team has to play a Test series against New Zealand and then face Australia.
