From 1991 to 2007, Jayasuriya played 110 Test matches, scoring 6973 runs at an average of 40.07, including 14 centuries and 31 half-centuries. In 445 ODI matches, he scored 13,430 runs, scoring 28 centuries and 68 half-centuries at an average of 32.36.

He played an important role in Sri Lanka's victory in the 1996 World Cup. Apart from this, Jayasuriya was also a brilliant bowler. While bowling left arm spin, he has taken 98 wickets in Test matches and 323 wickets in ODI matches. He is one of the world's greatest all-rounders in ODIs. Jayasuriya has also played 31 T20 international matches in his career. He has also played 30 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
