Jayasuriya's first responsibility as head coach will be the limited overs matches against West Indies, which will be played in Dambulla and Pallekele. Jayasuriya has previously been an advisor to Sri Lankan cricket. He was first appointed interim head coach in July. In the last few months, under Jayasuriya's supervision, Sri Lanka won its first bilateral ODI series against India after 27 years. Defeated England in a Test match on their soil for the first time in 10 years and recently defeated New Zealand 2-0 in a home Test.

Played an important role in Sri Lanka's 1996 ODI World Cup victory

From 1991 to 2007, Jayasuriya played 110 Test matches, scoring 6973 runs at an average of 40.07, including 14 centuries and 31 half-centuries. In 445 ODI matches, he scored 13,430 runs, scoring 28 centuries and 68 half-centuries at an average of 32.36.

He played an important role in Sri Lanka's victory in the 1996 World Cup. Apart from this, Jayasuriya was also a brilliant bowler. While bowling left arm spin, he has taken 98 wickets in Test matches and 323 wickets in ODI matches. He is one of the world's greatest all-rounders in ODIs. Jayasuriya has also played 31 T20 international matches in his career. He has also played 30 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
