Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will felicitate the Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai team at a function here for winning the Irani Cup for the first time in 27 years. The reigning Ranji Trophy champions won the Irani Cup for the first time since 1997-98 by leading by 121 runs in the first innings against Rest of India. MCA president Ajinkya Naik told PTI on Saturday that the ceremony will be held at the Wankhede Stadium and will be attended by board officials, apex council members, ground and club representatives as well as members of the Cricket Reform Committee.

Mumbai continues the tradition of playing Khadoos cricket

Naik said in a statement, 'Mumbai once again set an excellent example of grit and spirit. The boys maintained the tradition of playing 'Khadoos' cricket by performing brilliantly throughout the five days. It was a perfect display of 'team work', with each player playing his part brilliantly. After last year's Ranji Trophy win, this Irani Cup win further adds to our achievements.'

Sarfaraz and Kotian are crowned with victory

Indian batsman Sarfaraz Khan played an important role in giving Mumbai a big lead by scoring unbeaten 222 runs in the first innings, while in the second innings, Tanush Kotian took the match away from the rest of India with his innings of 114 runs. For Rest of India, opener Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 191 runs in the first innings. Mumbai started the final day at 153 runs for six wickets and declared the second innings at 329 runs for eight wickets. In this way Mumbai's total lead became 450 runs.

Both teams agreed to draw the match

Chasing the target of 451 runs in less than a session was impossible, leading to Rest of India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad joining hands with his rival Ajinkya Rahane for a draw. In this way, defending Ranji Trophy champion Mumbai won the match.
