Mendis made his debut in 2022
Mendis made his debut in 2022, scoring 61 runs in his only innings against Australia. After this he was dropped from the team. Mendis made a comeback in 2024 and has been on fire ever since. Mendis has overall scored 873 runs in 13 innings across eight Tests and has scored 812 runs in 12 innings (seven Tests) since returning in early 2024.
Mendis has scored four half-centuries and four centuries in seven Tests this year. His average during this period was 81 while his best score was 164. His scores in 13 Test innings are: 61, 102, 164, 92 not out, 9, 12, 113, 74, 4, 64, 114, 13 and 51 not out (Continuing Test).

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka scored 306/3 on the first day of the Test, with Mendis still at the crease. Angelo Mathews is playing on 78 not out. Earlier, Sri Lanka had won the toss and decided to bat first. New Zealand started well. In the very first over, opening batsman Pathum Nissanka was dismissed cheaply for one run. Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal then made a partnership of 122 runs for the second wicket.
After this, however, Dimuth Karunaratne was run out on 46 runs. After this Chandimal got another partner in the form of Mathews. The pair added 97 runs for the third wicket. After this Chandimal was out after scoring 116 runs. Mathew and Mendis then batted without losing any more wickets. Together they added 85 runs for the fourth wicket. Sri Lanka leads the two-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test by 63 runs.
