Despite the murder case, Shakib Al Hasan will not have any problem in returning to Bangladesh

India National Cricket Team vs Bangladesh National Cricket Team 2nd Test 2024: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is confident that Shakib Al Hasan will not face any problem on his return to Bangladesh. He will play in the series against South Africa next month for the first time after the coup of the Awami League government. Shakib’s name was also included among the 147 people involved in the murder case in Dhaka last month. He became an MP in January this year. When Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister after nationwide protests on August 5, Shakib was playing the Global T20 League in Canada. After this, he went to Pakistan to play a Test series and later played county cricket for Surrey and is currently playing a Test series against India in India. He was not in Bangladesh during and after the protests in Bangladesh. The case is related to the death of Mohammed Rubel, who was burnt during the protest on August 5 and died two days later. Shahriar Nafees, who is associated with BCB’s cricket operations, said on Monday that the country’s government has confirmed that Shakib will not be harassed. Nafees said, “I think the respected chief advisor, legal advisor and sports advisor have said everything clearly about Shakib. There is a clear message from the Bangladesh government that no one will be harassed unfairly in whatever cases have been filed. We believe that the interim government has made its opinion clear on Shakib. As long as there is no injury problem or selection problem, I personally feel that there is no reason why Shakib Al Hasan should not play the domestic series in Bangladesh.”

Last month, Bangladesh’s legal adviser Asif Nazrul also said he hoped Shakib would not be arrested in connection with the case. He said, “There is only one case against Shakib. I hope he will not be arrested. I have learned that police forces have been asked to exercise as much restraint as possible in case something unbelievable happens.”

Soon after news of his name being named in the case surfaced, Shakib received support from his Bangladesh teammates, who posted messages on their respective social-media accounts. But his silence during the massive student-led protests in July and August was also criticised. While many of his national teammates have spoken out at various points about the protests and particularly the loss of lives of students, Shakib has not.

Bangladesh is currently in India to play a Test and T20 series. They are scheduled to play a two-Test home series against South Africa in October. Cricket South Africa’s security team on Monday completed an assessment of Dhaka and Chittagong, where the Tests will be played, and is expected to inform the BCB of its decision later this week.
