Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is the best captain in IPL history. He has led Chennai Super Kings in 226 matches in the IPL. Dhoni has won the most wins (133) and joint-most titles (5) in his 16-year career with Chennai Super Kings. Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL title in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. MS Dhoni also has the best win percentage (58.84) among captains who have led their team in 50 or more matches.
Rohit Sharma
As captain, Rohit has led the team in 158 matches in IPL. Despite leading the Mumbai team in lesser numbers compared to Dhoni, Rohit Sharma as captain has jointly won 5 IPL titles. Apart from this, Rohit has the record of second most wins (87) as captain in IPL. Apart from this, he has the second best win percentage (55.06) as a captain in the top-10.
Gautam Gambhir
Apart from Rohit and Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir is the only captain to win more than one IPL title. Led Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders from 2009 to 2018. Gambhir was successful in winning two titles for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014. The left-handed player has the third best win percentage (55.03) in the top-10 as captain.
