Meanwhile, in the third and last ODI, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and decided to bat first. After winning the toss, the New Zealand team came to bat first and had a disappointing start and the team suffered its first major setback at the score of just 24 runs. After this, Will Young and Henry Nicholls together took charge of New Zealand's innings. It started raining after the end of the 21st over. Due to which the match had to be stopped midway. After waiting for a few hours the match was cancelled. With this, Sri Lanka captured the series, while the New Zealand team had to return empty handed.
Sri Lanka displayed excellent batting in the second match. The team's top order looks strong, wicketkeeper batsman Kusal Mendis handled the innings and played the match winning innings. In bowling, Mahesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay bowled lethally. The performance of the New Zealand team under the captaincy of Mitchell Santner has been disappointing so far. His batting has proved to be the weak link against spin bowling. However, batsmen like Mark Chapman and Mitchell Haye have scored runs to some extent.
