Anantnag: The Department of Handlooms and Handicrafts of the Center and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has included the iconic 'Kashmir Willow Cricket Bat' in the newly notified list of handicrafts.
Kashmir Cricket Bat Manufacturers Association (CBMAK) has expressed gratitude to the government for this important step. He said that this will not only benefit the bat makers and artisans across the valley, but will also contribute to the long-term development of this traditional craft.
Officials said, 'By including Kashmir willow cricket bat in the category of notified handicrafts, bat manufacturers can now avail the benefits of schemes and welfare measures under the National Handicraft Development Program (NHDP) and Comprehensive Handicraft Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS). Additionally, the order facilitates the issuance and renewal of identity cards for artisans, thereby improving their access to government support, incentives and training.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, CBMAK spokesperson and vice-chairman Fawzul Kabir said, 'We are extremely grateful to the Center and the Department of Handlooms and Handicrafts of Jammu and Kashmir for recognizing the craftsmanship involved in making the famous Kashmir willow cricket bats of Jammu and Kashmir. Fawzul Kabir said, 'This recognition will open new avenues for our artisans, ensure financial security and promote our products on both national and international platforms. We thank the Ministry of Textiles for its timely intervention, which will enable better access to resources and strengthen our heritage.
Kashmir cricket bat industry, mainly located in Anantnag and Pulwama districts, is home to over 400 manufacturing units and supports the livelihood of thousands of skilled artisans. These artisans transform locally sourced Kashmir willow into premium quality bats, which have received global recognition for their craftsmanship. The sector not only contributes to local employment, but also helps preserve the age-old tradition of combining artistry with sports.
Inclusion of willow bat in the official handicraft list will ease the implementation of development plans for the cricket bat industry and ensure greater participation of local artisans in skill enhancement programmes. Officials said the move is expected to boost exports, strengthen the 'Make in India' initiative and recognize Kashmir's unique contribution to the world of cricket.
