BCCI scraps Impact Player rule in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to abolish the impact player rule in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 (SMT T20). However, this rule will remain in force for the next three seasons of IPL. BCCI had introduced this rule in SMT a few years ago and later implemented it in the Indian Premier League (IPL) also.

BCCI informed the State Association on Monday that it has been decided to abolish the provision of 'Impact Player' for the current season.

BCCI has taken the decision to remove the Impact Player sometime after the decision to retain him in the IPL for the next three seasons i.e. till 2027. Since its implementation in the 2023 season, this rule has sparked debate over whether it is actually beneficial for Indian cricket, which was the original intention, or is it harming the development of all-rounders?

Many high-profile players like Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli had expressed concern over this rule, saying that it could be harmful for the development of all-rounders. On the other hand, Ravichandran Ashwin had praised this rule openly.

Rohit had then said in a podcast – I think this will hinder (the development of all-rounders), because 11 players play in cricket, not 12 players. I'm not a big fan of impact players. You are doing something like this with the game, so that it can bring some entertainment to the people around.

In May this year, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had called this rule a 'test case' in the IPL and said that it is not permanent, he had said that it will be abolished.

Saurashtra head coach Neeraj Odedra welcomed BCCI's decision. He said that this is a good change. Also, ICC does not have this rule in major tournaments, so it will be good for those cricketers who want to play for India after the domestic season.

What is the impact player rule?

The 'Impact Player Rule' was implemented in IPL 2023, but before that this rule was implemented in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23 (SMAT 2022-23). After this this rule was implemented in IPL. According to this rule, according to the 'Impact Player Rule' in IPL, apart from the playing eleven, both the teams have to name 5-5 substitute players. Out of these five, one is fielded as an impact player. Impact player does both batting and bowling. The player who goes out after the impact player comes into the game. He is not used in the entire match.
