Sports Desk: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to scrap the 'Impact Player' rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. BCCI has informed this decision to all the state associations.

The 'Impact Player' provision was implemented in this tournament a few years ago, after which it was also implemented in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, BCCI has clarified that this rule will be removed from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the current season.

The reason behind this decision is that the 'Impact Player' rule resulted in scores of more than 250 runs multiple times in the last IPL season. Many players including Indian captain Rohit Sharma have criticized this rule. Rohit said in a podcast that this will eliminate all-rounder players.

Saurashtra head coach Neeraj Odedra has welcomed the BCCI's decision, saying, “It is a good change. “It is not part of the major ICC tournaments, so it will be beneficial for cricketers who want to play for India after the domestic season.”

What is the impact player rule?

• In the Impact Rule, the team names 4 substitute players at the time of the toss.
• Any one of these players can be used during the match.
• The impact player rule has to be used before the 14th over.
• Under this rule, one player has to go out and in his place another player comes on the field.
• The player who is out after this cannot be included again during the match.

Earlier in the year 2005, ICC had tried this rule of substitute. Then it was known as 'Super Sub'. There is such a rule in Big Bash also. It is known as X Factor in Australia's T-20 league.
